The estate was later subdivided for residential use, with the suburb developing as a family-oriented residential precinct characterised by detached houses on established sections.
The suburb features a settled neighbourhood atmosphere with mature trees and a mix of housing styles reflecting its phased development. Its central-suburban location within Timaru places it near other established residential areas such as Highfield and Gleniti. Marchwiel falls within the Rangitata parliamentary electorate.
