South Canterbury has a wide range of free swimming spots, from the sheltered waters of Caroline Bay Beach in Timaru to the gorge swimming holes of Te Moana, Waihi and Otaio inland. The district’s rivers (Opihi, Temuka, Rangitata, Orari and Pareora) all have popular summer spots, while the alpine lakes of the Mackenzie District, including Lake Opuha, reward a longer drive.
