About the Beach
Caroline Bay is a sheltered sandy beach formed in the lee of the Timaru harbour breakwater — the breakwater’s construction in the late 19th century caused sand deposition that created the beach over time, making it effectively a consequence of the port’s development. Its sheltered position means calmer water than exposed coastal beaches and makes it the go-to swimming beach for Timaru families through summer.
In 2014, Caroline Bay was voted the most popular beach in the South Island — a recognition of its combination of safe swimming conditions, facilities and accessibility from a major town.
Beach Facilities
The beach and surrounding park have been developed progressively as a recreation destination. A community pontoon with slide was launched in April 2019, anchored offshore for swimmers to reach during the summer season. On the park side: a children’s paddling pool, a destination-sized playground, two free BBQs, outdoor gym equipment, beach volleyball courts, mini golf, tennis courts, a skate park and a small train offering rides through the park during busy periods. Changing rooms, showers and toilets are all available on site.
CBAY Aquatic Centre
The Caroline Bay Trust Aoraki Centre (CBAY) sits within the bay complex and is the district’s main indoor aquatic facility, operating with a separate admission charge. The centre includes a 25-metre lane pool, leisure pool with graded beach-style entry, toddlers’ pool, splash deck, a programme pool with wheelchair ramp access, two hydroslides, a gym and a café. A 50-metre outdoor pool opens mid-November to late March for the summer season.
The Bay Through the Year
Summer (December to February) is peak season — the pontoon is in the water, the outdoor pool is open, and the bay is at its busiest. The Caroline Bay Carnival runs over the New Year period each year, one of the longest-running community festivals in South Canterbury. Outside of summer, the beach and park remain accessible year-round for walking, picnicking and running — though swimming is for the hardier visitor outside the warm months.
