The Pareora River rises in the Hunters Hills southwest of Timaru and flows generally north then east to reach the Pacific Ocean near the small township of Pareora, about 10 kilometres south of Timaru. Its traditional Māori name is Pureora.
The river is hill-fed and noted for clearer water than many larger Canterbury braided rivers, with a cobble bed in many reaches that supports pleasant swimming and recreation.

What the grades mean
Excellent and Good: rarely unsafe for swimming. Fair: usually fine, but avoid swimming after rain. Poor: often unsuitable, especially after rain, so check the latest result first.
Grades use LAWA’s method: the 95th percentile of routine E. coli results over the five summers from 2020/21 to 2024/25, with at least 50 tests (Pareora Huts: 1,525 per 100 mL from 74 tests).

The Background
The Pareora River drains the northern Hunters Hills and flows through open farmland before entering a short gorge section near its mouth. The river supplies part of Timaru’s water via an intake and historic dam infrastructure dating back to the 1870s.
Recreational use centres on Evans Crossing for swimming and the Pareora River Walkway for walking. The walkway follows the river through limestone scenery with opportunities to see bellbirds (korimako) and fossil beds along the banks.
The small Pareora Huts community of holiday baches lies along the upper river and has long served as an informal recreation base for locals and visitors.
Evans Crossing Swimming
Evans Crossing is widely regarded as the nicest swimming spot on the Pareora River. The cobble streambed provides good water clarity and a clean feel underfoot in a sheltered, open farmland setting that requires no long walk to reach.
The site is the official upstream monitoring location for Environment Canterbury water quality sampling.
Water Quality and Safety
Environment Canterbury monitors the Pareora River at Evans Crossing weekly from 1 November to 31 March. Visitors should check current results on the LAWA website before swimming and avoid the water for 48–72 hours after heavy rain, when E. coli levels can rise.
It is unsafe to swim directly above or below the historic Pareora Dam on the walkway.
Pareora River Walkway
The Pareora River Walkway starts near Evans Crossing and follows the river for approximately 4 km return to the historic dam site. The track is rated medium difficulty, takes about 90 minutes, and features uneven surfaces that can be muddy in winter.
Highlights include limestone rock formations, shade from tall trees, picnic spots, birdlife and fossil beds. The track can be accessed from either side of the river, though 4WD is recommended if crossing at Evans Crossing. River levels can change quickly; do not attempt to ford in flood conditions.
