About the Skate Park
The Caroline Bay Skate Park sits within the broader recreation zone at Caroline Bay and was already in place when the new CPlay playground was added around it. The skate park caters to skateboarders and scooter riders of varying abilities and is positioned next to the bike skills park.
The surrounding CPlay development is a community-led project with a budget of approximately $3 million, raised through donations, grants and council support. The full playground complex measures 16,288.86 m² and was one of the largest in New Zealand at the time of completion. It features more than 40 play elements themed around local stories and mahika kai, including a shipwreck, lighthouse slide tower and a 50 m tandem flying fox.
Caroline Bay Reserve
Caroline Bay is Timaru’s premier recreation reserve, covering 34 hectares and featuring a sheltered sandy beach, the Trevor Griffiths Rose Gardens, a miniature railway, outdoor gym equipment and extensive open spaces. The reserve also includes beach volleyball courts, mini golf and tennis courts, making it a complete family destination with views across the bay to the Port of Timaru.
The area hosts the long-running Caroline Bay carnival each summer and supports year-round use for walking, picnics and events. Little penguins have established a colony in the dunes, which were revegetated with native plants.
