What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from August 2024. ERO found achievement in reading, writing and maths had lifted since its previous visit, with most students reaching or passing the level expected for them in reading and writing, and some making faster than usual progress.

Structured literacy is now well established, the local curriculum draws on local history and students’ interests, coaching is building teachers’ skills, and tikanga Māori and te ao Māori are part of class programmes.

Most students attend regularly. ERO noted that more girls than boys reach the expected level in literacy, and that maths is the area the school needs to improve.

The agreed next steps are to keep embedding and evaluating structured literacy, review the maths programme and train all staff in one consistent schoolwide way of teaching maths, and strengthen relationship-based learning through coaching that responds to staff and student feedback. The school will also check each year how well its attendance strategies are working.

Enrolling

Barton Rural School runs an enrolment scheme. Students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol. The board decides how many out-of-zone places, if any, are available, and advertises them in a local newspaper. When there are more applicants than places, a priority order set by the Ministry applies, with a ballot within a priority group.

The school’s enrolment page explains the priority order and suggests contacting the school first to confirm whether your address is in zone. Enrolment paperwork comes from the school office.
