About the Library

The current building occupies a distinctive triangular block between Church, Sophia and Bank Streets in central Timaru — designed by the prominent New Zealand architectural firm Miles, Warren and Mahoney. Easy to find on foot from anywhere in the CBD.

The library’s history begins with a Carnegie Corporation grant: the foundation stone was laid in June 1908 and the building opened on 3 June 1909. It moved to a combined Community Hall and Library in 1957, then to its current purpose-built location. In 1989, following the merger of Timaru City Council with neighbouring councils, the library became the anchor of the Timaru District Libraries network — now three libraries covering Timaru, Temuka and Geraldine.
