About the Library
The current library building occupies a distinctive triangular block between Church, Sophia and Bank Streets in central Timaru. It was designed by the architectural firm Miles Warren and Mahoney and opened in 1979.
The library’s origins trace to a Carnegie Corporation grant. The original Carnegie library opened on 3 June 1909 after the foundation stone was laid in 1908. The service later operated from a combined community hall and library before relocating to the purpose-built facility on Sophia Street.
In 1989, following local government reorganisation, the library became the anchor of the Timaru District Libraries network, which now includes branches in Temuka and Geraldine. Items borrowed at any branch can be returned at another.
Services
Physical loans include books, DVDs and audiobooks. Digital resources cover e-books, e-audiobooks, online newspapers, magazines and streaming services. Free computers with USB ports, free WiFi and internet via the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa are available throughout the building.
Additional offerings include a dedicated children’s area with regular storytime sessions, free printing and photocopying, a Justice of the Peace service, computer help sessions and bookable meeting rooms and multi-purpose spaces.
Temuka and Geraldine Branches
The network includes Temuka Library and Geraldine Library. Both branches also function as Timaru District Council service centres for paying rates and accessing other council services. All three libraries share the same catalogue and membership system.
