What Makes It Worth a Visit

Saltwater Creek runs through a low-lying coastal wetland area southwest of Timaru. The walking path follows the north side of the creek on a well-maintained gravel track that is mostly flat.

One side offers views of the stream and distant mountains, while the other side passes farmland with animals and crops. Extensive native planting along the route supports riparian vegetation and bird habitat.

The track ends at Coonoor Road beside a picturesque historic stone bridge. Shorter options exist by starting or finishing at Mowbray Street or St George Street. The route is suitable for a relaxed outing and forms part of Timaru’s network of walking and off-road cycling tracks.

Birdlife Along the Creek

The wetland corridor attracts a variety of birds. Commonly seen species include pūkeko, shags, geese, ducks and paradise shelduck. Less common sightings include royal spoonbill and white heron. Quiet walking improves the chance of close views along the creek banks and wetland edges.

Extending the Walk

From Coonoor Road the route connects directly to the Otipua Creek Walkway. This 1.5 km easy section takes about 20 minutes and passes paddocks, farm animals and further native plantings before reaching the BMX track at Centennial Park. The combined walk creates a longer urban green corridor suitable for a half-day outing.
