About the Fishery

The Pareora River has a long reputation among South Canterbury anglers as a productive dry-fly stream. The water runs clear and relatively shallow through most of its accessible length, making fish visible and rewarding to stalk with a well-presented dry fly or nymph. Brown trout are the only salmonid species in the river.

The river flows through Pareora Gorge in its middle reaches — scenic, steep terrain that limits access but concentrates angling pressure into a few well-known pools and runs. The upper catchment above the gorge is more open but requires longer walks. The Pareora dam in the upper catchment supplies a substantial portion of Timaru’s drinking water, so some sections above the dam may have access restrictions.

Low flows in summer are typical for the Pareora — fish can be concentrated in deeper pools and may be more selective in low, clear conditions. Early morning or evening fishing in summer can improve results.
