What to Expect
The Tengawai reaches the Ōpihi near Pleasant Point. At Tengawai Bridge it runs in a shingle bed between willow banks, and about a kilometre downstream it meets the much wider, braided Ōpihi.
The Fish & Game regulations name it the Tengawai River / Te Ana-a-wai, the bridge and road use Tengawai, and some Fish & Game pages and fishing guides write Te Ngawai.
Fish & Game lists the Tengawai with the Ōpihi tributaries that offer good fishing, particularly early in the season. Like the other small rivers of the Ōpihi system, it can run very low in mid to late summer, when the trout drop back into the deeper pools.
Below the confluence, the Ōpihi from the Tengawai down to the mouth is the most popular stretch of the main river.
How to Fish the Tengawai River
Where and when
Fish & Game points anglers to the water above Pleasant Point, early in the season. Start at Tengawai Bridge and work upstream through the runs and pools, moving quietly along the willow banks. Once the river drops in summer, much of it gets thin, and the deeper pools hold what fish remain.
What to catch and what to use
- Brown trout: the trout of the Ōpihi system average around a kilogram. Light fly or spinning gear suits a river this size.
- Methods: check the Central South Island regulations for the methods allowed, and ask at a tackle shop which flies and lures are working.
Getting There and Facilities
- Driving: from Pleasant Point, take Tengawai Road to Tengawai Bridge on the north-west edge of the town. Totara Valley Road and Opihi Road meet just north of the bridge.
- On foot: a walking track follows the south bank downstream of the bridge toward the Ōpihi.
- Private land: much of the river above the town runs through farmland. Ask permission before crossing private land.
- Etiquette: Fish & Game asks anglers not to park in gateways, to leave gates as they find them and to stay within the river margins.
- Facilities: Pleasant Point has shops and cafes a short drive from the bridge.
Rules and Safety
- The Tengawai River / Te Ana-a-wai and its tributaries have their own entry in the Fish & Game Central South Island regulations: open from 1 October to 30 April, fly and spinner only, so no bait. You need a Fish & Game licence, and to fish for salmon you also need a sea-run salmon licence and a season bag limit card.
- Do not park on the bridge or its approaches.
- Small rivers like this can rise and colour quickly after heavy rain in the hills. Do not cross when the river is high or discoloured.
- Check, clean and dry your waders and gear before moving to another river.
Tackle and Bait Nearby
- Davo’s Fishing Hunting & Sport, 186 Hilton Highway, Washdyke, Timaru: rods, reels, lures, flies and line.
Fishing licences can be bought online from Fish & Game. For the river below the confluence, see our Ōpihi River fishing guide.
