What to Expect
The Emily Falls Track leads through dense native forest to the base of the falls on Emily Stream. The route includes a steeper initial section, a fork toward Rata Stream, and crossings of small streams before descending to Emily Stream.
Rata Stream and Emily Stream can flood and become impassable, so visitors must assess water levels carefully and avoid crossing when flooded.
The stream and falls are named after Emily Acland, wife of J B Acland and daughter of Bishop Harper. The track provides access to one of the park’s waterfall features within a protected scenic reserve that preserves significant lowland podocarp forest remnants.
Peel Forest Scenic Reserve
Peel Forest Park Scenic Reserve is the largest reserve in the Geraldine area and protects mature podocarp forest dominated by kahikatea, tōtara and mataī. The forest supports a rich variety of native birds including bellbird/korimako, kererū, rifleman/tītitipounamu, tomtit/miromiro and long-tailed cuckoo/koekoeā.
The reserve also features cultural significance for tangata whenua and historical European settlement stories tied to early runholders who helped preserve forest remnants.
Other Tracks in Peel Forest
