About the Track
The Ribbonwood Track runs through the Talbot Forest Scenic Reserve — a podocarp-broadleaf forest remnant beside Geraldine, named for and containing ribbonwood (mānatu) trees. The track winds through the forest before climbing to provide views over the Geraldine plains toward the Southern Alps on a clear day.
The reserve also contains tōtara, mataī, kahikatea and tree ferns, making it one of the better examples of native lowland forest accessible directly from a South Canterbury town. The track is well-maintained and popular with both locals and visitors as a morning or afternoon walk from central Geraldine.
Pioneer Trail Connection
At the far end, the Ribbonwood Track connects to the Pioneer Trail — a longer cross-country route through the Talbot Forest. This connection allows walkers to extend the outing significantly for those wanting a more substantial half-day in the forest. The Talbot Forest also connects to the Pekapeka Gully Track, providing further linking options.
