About the Walk

Saltwater Creek runs through a low-lying coastal wetland area southwest of Timaru, cutting between farmland and the urban edge. The walking path follows the creek closely on a well-maintained gravel track — flat enough for pushchairs and easy enough for young children. With only slight uphill sections near the picnic area, it’s one of Timaru’s most accessible walks.

Looking toward the creek, the mountains of the Southern Alps are visible in the distance on clear days. Looking away from the water, the walk passes through open farmland with scattered trees. A picnic table on the highest point of the track on the south side of the creek makes a good stopping point.

Birdlife

The Saltwater Creek corridor is excellent for birdwatching. Species commonly seen along the walk include pūkeko, paradise shelduck (pūtangitangi), shags (kawau), mallard ducks, Canada geese and, less commonly, royal spoonbill (kōtuku-ngutupapa) and white heron (kōtuku). The wetland edges and creek banks attract wading birds in particular. Walking quietly gives the best chance of close views.

Extending the Walk

At Coonoor Road, the walk can be extended by continuing via the Otipua Creek Walkway toward Centennial Park — turning the Saltwater Creek route into a longer urban walk linking two of Timaru’s key green corridors. The combined route is well suited for a half-day out from the city.
