Te Moana Gorge Camping: River, Long-Tailed Bats and Waterfalls Near Geraldine

Last updated May 2026

Te Moana Gorge Camping Area is a collection of three free campsites strung along a 2km stretch of the Hae Hae Te Moana River, 15km west of Geraldine. The gorge is one of the more remote and rewarding camping destinations in the Timaru District — native forest, a river with good fishing, and populations of the rare long-tailed bat (pekapeka) that can be seen at dusk.

About the Gorge

The three campsites sit beside the Hae Hae Te Moana River — a clear, fast-flowing river that carves through native bush and limestone bluffs on its way down from the ranges. The bush cover along the gorge is significantly denser than the open farmland around Geraldine, with native vegetation providing canopy over the campsites.

A total fire ban applies throughout the gorge — bring a gas cooker. The 14-night maximum stay is generous compared to the district’s urban freedom camping sites, and the three separate campsites mean it’s possible to find a quiet spot even when the gorge is popular.

Long-Tailed Bats

Te Moana Gorge is habitat for the long-tailed bat (pekapeka-tou-roa). New Zealand’s only native land mammal, long-tailed bats emerge at dusk to hunt insects over the river. Dusk in summer is the most reliable time to spot them — watch for fast, erratic flight low over the water.

Waterfalls and Walks

Walking tracks continue deeper into the gorge beyond the camping area, leading to waterfalls further up the valley. The tracks are not formally maintained so some route-finding is involved; sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are recommended.

Fishing

The Hae Hae Te Moana River supports trout fishing within the gorge. A valid freshwater fishing licence from Fish & Game New Zealand is required. The river connects with the broader Orari catchment, managed as part of the Canterbury region’s trout fishery.
