Caroline Bay is Timaru’s most popular recreational destination, and the skate park within the reserve is one of several facilities that make it a useful all-day spot for families and youth. Sitting alongside tennis courts, beach volleyball, a destination playground and an outdoor gym, the skate park is free, open year-round and accessible without transport from much of the city. Caroline Bay is Timaru’s only sandy beach between Oamaru and Banks Peninsula, sheltered by the harbour breakwater.

The Skate Park
The Caroline Bay skate park is part of the wider reserve complex rather than a purpose-built destination skate facility. It suits beginners and younger skaters, sitting within easy reach of the playground and picnic areas. For riders looking for more technical terrain, the Centennial Park pump track — an 800 m² Velosolutions asphalt circuit — is the more specialist facility in the city.
Caroline Bay Reserve
Caroline Bay covers 34 hectares and is the centrepiece of Timaru’s waterfront. The reserve includes the CPlay playground — a large, modern play space — as well as beach volleyball courts, outdoor gym equipment, mini golf, tennis courts, a small train offering rides and two free gas BBQs. The Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre is located within the reserve and has a 25-metre swimming pool, hydroslide, spa pool, paddling pool and café.
The bay beach itself is the only sandy beach between Oamaru and Banks Peninsula, sheltered by the harbour breakwater. It’s calm enough for swimming in summer and is popular with families. The Caroline Bay Walk and Cycleway starts from the Piazza at the northern end of the reserve, connecting into the wider coastal track network.
