History

Timaru’s European history begins with The Levels, a sheep station run by George Rhodes in the 1840s. The town grew after January 1859, when 100 British settlers arrived on the Strathallan, followed by a further 360 immigrants in 1862–63. By 1866 the population had reached 1,000, and Timaru was proclaimed a borough in 1868.

The town’s growth was closely tied to its port. Building an artificial harbour on this exposed, surf-beaten coast was a significant engineering challenge: construction of the stone breakwaters took decades. Once established, the port became the economic engine of South Canterbury, enabling the export of wool, frozen meat and grain from the interior.

Economy

Timaru’s economy remains strongly rooted in agriculture and food processing. South Canterbury is productive farming country: dairy, sheep, deer, and cropping (grain and seed) all feature prominently. PrimePort Timaru handles around $1.1 billion in annual exports, making it one of the South Island’s most significant cargo ports. Light manufacturing, engineering, and retail services for the wider South Canterbury region round out the local economy.
