Kyle Park Transport Museum Seadown: Traction Engines, Tractors and Classic Trucks

Last updated November 2026

Steam is the thread that runs through Kyle Park Transport Museum, where two traction engines share the sheds with a long list of other steam-powered items. The museum is at 33 Brosnan Road in Seadown, just off State Highway 1 near Timaru.

Alongside the steam gear you can look over vintage tractors, old farm machinery and harvesting equipment, and a large display of classic and vintage trucks. Volunteers from a local traction engine club run the museum. The museum opens on Saturday and Monday afternoons, or by appointment.

More About Kyle Park Transport Museum

The museum grew out of a club. The South Canterbury Traction Engine and Steam Club was formed in 1963, and over time it has evolved into the Kyle Park Transport Museum. The Otago Daily Times has since described it as a club with 60 years of operation behind it.

The club is run by volunteers. Its aims are to preserve transport machinery from the past and to encourage younger people to learn how to operate and maintain traction engines, and members can train to fire up a traction engine themselves.

The collection is spread across several buildings, with separate sheds for tractors and for trucks as well as the steam and machinery displays. The museum sums up its theme as the history of horse power to HP, from horse-drawn implements to steam traction engines.

The Collection

Steam and traction engines

The centrepiece is the steam collection: two traction engines and numerous other steam-powered items. Venture Timaru’s tourism listing describes the two traction engines as working engines, and the club trains its members to run them.

Tractors and farm machinery

A large collection of vintage tractors and old farm machinery fills other buildings. Club members learn to operate harvesting machinery such as chaff cutters, and a chaff cutter has been run at the museum’s open days.

Classic and vintage trucks

A dedicated truck shed holds a large display of classic and vintage trucks, part of the local transport history the museum sets out to show.
