Historical and Cultural Sites in Timaru

Local Places of Interest

Timaru has a strong collection of museums, galleries and historical sites for a city of its size. The South Canterbury Museum covers the region’s natural and human history, the Aigantighe Art Gallery is one of New Zealand’s oldest provincial galleries, and the Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre is the only place in New Zealand where you can see tā moko rock art in an indoor setting. District towns also punch above their weight — the Pleasant Point Museum and Railway, Geraldine Historical Museum and Temuka Museum are all worth a visit.
